The Life Cycle of Data and Why it Matters. The value of data changes over time. Traditional tape based solutions value all data as equal with no distinction between mission critical and older retention data. EVS INTELLIGENT BACKUP™ organizes data across multiple storage platforms based upon performance needs, frequency of use, amount of protection required, and other organizational concerns.
Simply put, mission critical data with its fast recover time objective is stored on higher cost, high performance disk (Primary Storage Tier). Older retention data is stored on lower cost, capacity driven disk (Secondary Storage Tier). In the future, a third tier of storage will be available for long term regulated or historical data parked on even lower cost disk (Cloud or Park Data).
Managing Backup within Storage Tiers
Custom Rules. As part of the daily scheduled backup process, our integrated rules-based engine evaluates and directs data to the appropriate storage tier. The rules for are highly flexible and custom to your processing environment. Rules can be easily modified over time to manage costs and update recovery objectives.
Example: Word processing documents that have not changed in the last 60 days will be maintained offsite within the lower cost Secondary Storage Tier.

Placing low-value data on low-cost disk drives and mission-critical data on high-speed, high-availability drives makes financial sense.
