The Consequences of Not Backing Up Laptops

Posted by Stephanie Aldrich on November 5, 2015

Laptop BackupEvery day, thousands of laptops are either lost or stolen. Often, the pain of the loss isn’t about the physical hardware, but the data that is stored on it. The lost laptop might have years of research information or GBs of important data that cannot be replaced. The desperation over the lost data can even drive some to posting rewards on the Internet in hopes of retrieving the invaluable information. It is a terrible situation so, if you’ve not experienced this problem, you should be grateful because it could happen when you least expect it. To help protect yourself against the pain and agony of a lost or stolen laptop, the best solution is to backup your data and sensitive information to another device like a removable media disk drive, and/or securely stored the data somewhere else to an offsite location using cloud backup and recovery services over the Internet.

However, many organizations do not backup their laptops. When an employee is too busy traveling or working on the laptop, clearly they do not have enough time to pause and backup all of their data. This lack of time has always been one of the main issues why laptops have not been backed up. It is important for you to know that although PC security software suites can protect your laptop from malware and other threats from the Internet, they will not be useful to you when your laptop is lost or stolen. Your fate will definitely determined by the person who stole your laptop, but not by the malware protection suites that is in your laptop.

Misuse of laptop data can result in serious problems that may demand you to write a series of apology letters to your customers and partners to communicate both your loss and the possible repercussion associated with it, so as to avoid facing any legal action. This can easily result in many hours of unproductive activity that can impede your performance and productivity of your organization. In addition to loss of customer confidence and potential business, you can equally face a series of legal actions or even class action for data breaches, which will force your company to spend thousands of dollars in litigation. Therefore, you need not put yourself in such situations, and that is why you must ensure that your laptops are all protected and backed up regularly.

There are lots of benefits associated with cloud backup solutions, which are subscription-based services over the Internet. These services have made laptop backups easy for every laptop owners. You can also automate your data backup on your laptop to have your data stored in remote servers. This gives you access to your data if the laptop is lost or stolen and, some backup software can even remotely wipe the data from the lost device to eliminate the risks of your data in the wrong hands.

If online backup is not an option for you, you can use a removable disk and also ensure that data in your laptop are all encrypted to make it impossible for the data to be accessed if you misplace or even lose your laptop.

Finally, you will do your laptop (and your data) a favor if you follow these three simple steps: protect your laptop using security suites, avoid it being out of your sight, ensure that it is backed up regularly.
